PROGRAMS:
Nexus NEACUHO 2009 proudly presents the following programs for this year's retreat weekend. Please note that there will only be one program per session.

Session #1 - Advice for the Higher Ed Job Seeker - Katie Orlando, Assistant Director of Residence Life, University of Maine Farmington

The average job search ranges between three to six months. Many experts consider looking for a job a full-time job in and of itself. This process can be rewarding if you go into the experience prepared. This session will start to prepare you for your future professional job search in the field. You will learn tips on how to effectively search and apply for open positions, how to establish a meaningful “virtual handshake” and market yourself well, how to make the most out of your phone and on-campus interview experiences, and how to professionally follow-up, accept and decline job offers.

Session #2 - Games that Make Us Go Hmm - Lenny Zeiger, Assistant Director of Residence Life, The New School

Tired of sitting, listening, and talking during most presentations? Want something that gets you more involved? Want to get up, get moving, and play? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then this is the session for you. Get ready to get out of your seats, interact, and stimulate your mind through action. Augusto Boal’s “Games for Actors and Non-Actors” offers up a series of activities with the purpose of tapping into our innermost feelings and thoughts. In his follow-up to Theater of the Oppressed, Boal offers what he calls “games that can transform and liberate you.” Join me for this fun and motivating way to become comfortable with yourself and those around you.

Session #3 - Professional Orgs/Networking/Getting Involved - Cathy Raynis Meeker, PhD, Past President NEACUHO

This session will challenge you to invest in professional organizations to change the work you do from just a job to a meaningful and fulfilling career. By committing to your own professional development and getting actively involved in a professional organization, you will enhance your knowledge and skills while developing a support system of mentors and friends through out the region. This session will provide you with suggestions about how to get involved and make the most of professional organizations as you start your first job.

Session #4 - Transitioning to Professional Positions - Carol Sacchetti , Assistant Director of Housing, Roger Williams University

You have transitioned from student to student leader to a Graduate position and you will continue this journey to your first professional position. What is different as you move into a full time position? At this stage, what is appropriate office behavior, office dress, and 'fishbowl living' as a full time employee. This interactive session will help you learn how to navigate through the waters of your new life.

Session #5 - Supervision - Shelly Keniston, Assistant Director of Residence Life and Housing, Bridgewater State College

Participants will learn some of the most important skills involved in appropriately directing, instructing, evaluating, and motivating student staff.

Session #6 - Making the Most of the Internship Experience - Donna Rogalski, Boston University, Area Director

These next two months will fly by, but you will gain so much in such a short period of time. At this session, we'll explore ways to make the most of your internship experience for two reasons: learning as much as you can at your current institution, AND how to prepare for the next step in your career. Please come with career ideas in mind.
